Monumental Honor is a non-profit dedicated to commemorating the nine Medal of Honor Recipients from Richmond, VA. As part of this mission, our volunteers help clean up a stretch of Scenic Route 5 that includes Powhatan Beaty Bridge. Powhatan was born a slave in Richmond, escaped, and joined the USCT in Ohio. His unit fought near Richmond in the Battle of New Market Heights where Powhatan and 13 other Colored Troops earned the Medal of Honor. These Recipients are often referred to as the "Forgotten 14" because the Lost Cause narrative did not want to acknowledge them. Our clean up often starts with an overview of the Forgotten 14 and the actions of Powhatan Beaty.
