Start at the Paul S. Sarbanes Visitor and Education Center and continue along the Sea Wall Trail, taking in nature and history along the way. Learn about the Lazaretto Lighthouse and the role the Lazaretto Quarantine Station had in defending Baltimore during the 1814 bombardment.
The Lazaretto Quarantine Station became the Chesapeake Flotilla barracks in 1813 to 1815, in doing so they mounted three cannons to assist in the defense of Fort McHenry. After the war ended, the city of Baltimore needed protection in a new way, a lighthouse. Which later became the first electric lighthouse on the Chesapeake and a guiding light for commerce for the Port of Baltimore. The dedication of the keepers of the light allowed ships to move safely through the harbor for 125 years. Although currently replaced by a replica, the original depot created parts for lighthouses still existing today carrying on the legacy of the Lazaretto point lighthouse.
