On Grandparents’ Day, bring your kids, grandkids, neighbors, and friends and march in the footsteps of Civil War soldiers at Antietam National Battlefield. This afternoon of high energy activities and a history hike will help to instill a lifelong interest in history! Join the American Battlefield Trust for this special Generations event, designed to help adults share their passion for history with younger people.
The Battle of Antietam marked a turning point in the American Civil War. Come take a guided, family-friendly hike with stops along the way to explore history! Try on wool uniforms, learn to drill, examine historic photographs and more as we trace the stories and footsteps of Union soldiers as they rushed toward the Sunken Road.
This event is free, but space is limited since afternoon admission to Antietam National Battlefield is included with registration.
Event Details:
- Sunday, September 7, 2025
- 2:30pm to 5:00pm
- FREE Registration is required and space is limited; admission to Antietam National Battlefield will be covered for registered families.
- Hiking and hands-on activities!
- Park in designated lots or overflow parking at Antietam National Battlefield Visitor Center: 5831 Dunker Church Rd, Sharpsburg, MD 21782
- Meet at the New York State Monument on the high ground just to the left of the Visitor Center; American Battlefield Trust staff will be on-site to point out the monument, too.
- The event is free and open to all who bring someone from another generation; activities and experiences are geared toward kids and ideal ages are 6-17.
Notes:
- Guardians must accompany the child they brought to the event.
- Please wear appropriate footwear and be prepared for inclement weather.
- Please be prepared to walk about 1.5 miles along dirt and grass trails and some rolling terrain.
- Water or snacks are not provided.
