For three days in early May, the hometown of Pennsylvania’s Civil War governor, Andrew Gregg Curtin, will host reenactors, historians, scholars, authors, local amateur experts, and visitors who care enough about our Nation’s greatest conflict to explore it with others. This year, all events are free, and none require registration. The Historical Museum and the Bellefonte Library will mount special Civil War exhibits to reinforce the impact of the Weekend.
The Civil War Weekend in Bellefonte will be three days of remembering and reflecting not just on our past, but on our future. Naturally, there will be examinations of battles, campaigns, and leaders. However, the social, philosophical, and political ideas that led to the conflict will also be considered, along with a frank review of how the War failed to resolve some of the issues that caused it. Our Weekend offers cannon fire and a special interfaith church service; Union and Confederate infantry supplemented by scholars who address essential antebellum and postbellum issues; and civilian reenactors, cemetery tours, and an impressive sale of Civil War books. Come to Bellefonte and consider our future in light of our past.
