Behind Confederate Lines

Battlewalk with Tim Smith and Andrew Dalton

Partner Event
July 3, 2025 @ 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM EDT

Join historians Tim Smith and Andrew Dalton from the Adams County Historical Society for an exclusive walking tour exploring the little-known farms and landmarks located behind the Confederate lines at Gettysburg. Discover the field hospitals that treated wounded soldiers from Hood’s and Pickett’s divisions, visit the historic Black Horse Tavern, and step back in time at John Crawford’s farm—an Underground Railroad station and the home of famous Black veterinarian and grave-digger Basil Biggs. This unique experience offers rare access to sites rich in both Civil War and local history—places often overlooked, yet vital to understanding the full story of Gettysburg. Please note that this program consists of an approximately 4.5 mile walk on sometimes rough terrain.

This tour will start along Fairfield Road. More information on the starting location will be emailed to participants at a later date.
