Did you know? The Second Continental Congress, meeting in Philadelphia, decided to establish an army for common defensive purposes. Congress authorized the raising of troops from different colonies to bolster the New England troops that comprised the bulk of the forces at that time. Each state—including Virginia—was designated a specific quota to send soldiers to the army.

The Culpeper Minutemen was a Virginia militia unit that defended the Old Dominion in 1775 and in later years some of its members joined the Continental Army. At this special Generations Event, we’ll explore local Virginia history and the larger story of the early years of the American Revolution with exciting, family-friendly activities!
