Road to Freedom: TN Tour Guide

Explore the Black Experience in Civil War-Era Tennessee
Road to Freedom TN App Icon

The Road to Freedom: TN encourages visitors and Tennesseans alike to uncover histories of Black contributions, agency, and sacrifice in the cause of freedom during the broadly defined Civil War-era (1830-1890). It unleashes the power of both perspective and place and introduces historical figures that have been given little voice until now. This application allows you to interact with these stories in various ways. You can explore Road to Freedom sites at large or investigate the state’s history through tour collections for particular Tennessee cities and themes.

This program, the American Battlefield Trust’s Road to Freedom: TN, has been funded by a grant from the Wars Commission Grant Fund, administered by the Tennessee Wars Commission, the Tennessee Historical Commission, Department of Environment and Conservation. The app will serve as a supplemental resource to the upcoming printed Tennessee Road to Freedom map and brochure. Collaborative in its creation, this program is supported by the efforts of Civil War Trails and the African American Heritage Preservation Foundation.
