Buffington Island Battlefield Memorial Park

Buffington Island lies in the Ohio River a half-mile downstream of the town of Portland, Ohio, and three miles upstream from Ravenswood, West Virginia. Nearby the Battle of Buffington Island, the only Civil War battle fought in Ohio, was fought on July 19, 1863. Today visitors can visit the 4-acre Buffington Island Battlefield Memorial Park located on the bank of the Ohio River to learn more about the battle and see the spot where Major Daniel McCook was mortally wounded during the battle, which is marked by a plaque.
