White Oak Road
Petersburg, VA 23803, USA

As the Appomattox campaign and the war drew to a close, General Warren was determined to cut communications between the commands of Lee and Pickett. On March 31, 1864, Warren's Fifth Corps, in cooperation with General Sheridan's advances through Dinwiddie Court House, assaulted entrenched Confederates on White Oak Road. Gen. Bushrod Johnson's counterattack stemmed the Union tide temporarily, but when the smoke cleared, Warren had secured the crossroads.
