On July 9, 1864, Confederate General Jubal Early and his army of 15,000 men encountered a Union force of only 5,800 under the command of General Lew Wallace at Monocacy Junction near Frederick, Maryland. Early's goal was to threaten, and perhaps capture, the United States capital to divert Union forces away from the Confederate army at Petersburg. A successful raid would also threaten the re-election of President Abraham Lincoln, whose public support was declining.
