The first of Lt. Gen. Stonewall Jackson's victories in his 1862 Valley Campaign was the result of Jackson's attempt to stop the Federal brigades of Generals Milroy and Schenck from infiltrating the Shenandoah Valley from western Virginia. On May 8, Milroy attacked Confederate positions on Sitlington Hill and was repulsed after four hours' desperate combat. The Federal retreat into western Virginia allowed Jackson's columns to concentrate on other Union threats in the valley.
