On June 27, 1862, Confederate forces under A.P. Hill and James Longstreet attacked Fitz John Porter's forces at Gaines' Mill, during the Peninsula Campaign. Due to the poor coordination of early attacks, Porter held his line long enough for George McClellan to move his forces toward the James River. Late in the day, one of the largest Confederate attacks of the entire war forced Porter to retreat.
