On the night of May 31, 1864, both Union and Confederate forces converged on Old Cold Harbor, along the flat lowlands of the Chickahominy River. The following twelve days saw Grant's Army of the Potomac attacking the heavily entrenched line of the Army of Northern Virginia in what was one of the bloodiest battles in American history. Although it was a great victory for Lee, he was never able to replace his losses in the field.
