On June 9, 1863, the Gettysburg campaign began when U.S. Maj. Gen. Alfred Pleasonton's cavalry surprised J.E.B. Stuart's troopers in what was to be the largest cavalry battle ever fought on the North American continent. Although over 1,500 men fell that day, the fight proved inconclusive. However, it did reveal Confederate forces slipping into the Shenandoah Valley and made it clear to both armies that Southern horsemen had finally met their match.
