History Under Siege is the American Battlefield Trust’s report on status of this nation’s most threatened hallowed ground. But it is more than a list of endangered historic sites – it is a roadmap for protecting these tangible links to our past. Because a protected battlefield is many things: a park with valuable open space; an outdoor classroom for learners of all ages; an economic engine drawing heritage tourists to a community; a memorial to the brave men and women who have served America in uniform.
Although there remain many battlefields literally under siege by the forces of development, the Trust has made significant progress in protecting these important historic resources, permanently setting aside more than 52,000 acres in 24 states associated with the Revolutionary War, War of 1812 and Civil War. Despite such success, our work is far from done. We hope this report will energize both longtime supporters and new allies to continue the fight to protect and preserve these priceless treasures.
We welcome our preservation partners and members of the public alike to participate in History Under Siege by nominating a battlefield for consideration. Any battle fought on American soil is eligible, from clashes during the colonial era up to the 20th century. Use this form below to provide us with information that will illustrate the threats faced that site – including photos, maps and other supplementary materials. To analyze each site, the Trust will consult historians and land use experts, local activists and other stakeholders. Nominations are due by March 1, 2020, and the final report will be released later this year.
