(Washington, D.C.) – For the seventh consecutive year, the Civil War Trust, the nation’s largest nonprofit battlefield preservation organization, has earned a coveted 4-star ranking from Charity Navigator, America’s leading charity evaluator.
“Savvy donors are demanding more accountability, transparency and quantifiable results from the charities they choose to support with their hard-earned dollars,” noted Charity Navigator President and CEO Michael Thatcher in a letter to the Trust. “This exceptional designation from Charity Navigator differentiates the Civil War Trust from its peers and demonstrates to the public it is worthy of their trust.”
The Trust continues earning accolades for its sound fiscal management and commitment to top-notch donor relations. Only 2 percent of the charities assessed by Charity Navigator have received at least seven consecutive 4-star evaluations, indicating that Civil War Trust outperforms most other charities in America. After evaluating recent financial and other documents, the watchdog group gave the Trust an overall rating of 94.62 on a 100-point scale.
“Receiving Charity Navigator’s 4-star rating for the seventh consecutive year is a testament to this organization’s constant effort to be the best possible steward of our members’ donation dollars, while providing the utmost accountability, honesty and integrity,” Trust President James Lighthizer remarked. “Our proven history of producing tangible results — permanently protecting close to 43,000 acres of historic hallowed ground — continues to inspire confidence and commitment in our supporters.”
This is only the most recent accolade acknowledging the accountability and integrity of the Trust. In October, GreatNonprofits, the leading provider of user reviews about nonprofit organizations, named the Trust a Top-Rated 2015 Nonprofit. According to GreatNonprofits, recipients of their Top-Rated Nonprofit awards are chosen based on the large number of positive reviews garnered by the organization in online media. These testimonials from volunteers, donors and clients provide an in-depth picture of individuals’ personal experiences with the nonprofit.

The Civil War Trust is the largest and most effective nonprofit organization devoted to the preservation of America’s hallowed battlegrounds. Although primarily focused on the protection of Civil War battlefields, through its Campaign 1776 initiative, the Trust also seeks to save the battlefields connected to the Revolutionary War and War of 1812.
