American Battlefield Trust’s Map of the Battle of Stones River
The brigade of William B. Hazen was posted along the Nashville Turnpike in a grove of cedar trees known as the Round Forest. This critical part of the collapsing Union position quickly became the focus of renewed Confederate attacks. The brigade suffered tremendous casualties but held the line. Hazen’s defense of the woods was so strong, the Confederates later named the area “Hell’s Half Acre”. Later that summer, a limestone monument was built by the veterans of the brigade there to memorialize their fallen comrades.
