The Unfinished Railroad - August 29, 1862
On August 29, Union commander John Pope concentrated his forces and prepared to assault Jackson’s position along an unfinished railroad grade. Despite being outnumbered, the Confederates fended off Pope's early efforts, including an attack that briefly pierced A. P. Hill's line. Other Federal attacks that afternoon on Jackson’s line were repulsed with heavy casualties on both sides. In the afternoon, Longstreet arrived on the field and took position on Jackson’s right flank.
