On March 20, Slocum was heavily reinforced by Maj. Gen. Oliver Howard's wing, but fighting was sporadic while Sherman was inclined to let Johnston retreat.  Maj. Gen. Robert F. Hoke's division adjusted their lines to meet the arrival of Howard's men on the Confederate left.
