The Civil War Trust Teachers Regiment is a community of educators who are passionate about the American Civil War and its interpretation in the classroom. We share ideas and experiences with the goal of creating the next generation of preservationists and historians. The Civil War Trust is proud to sponsor and support our mission with a variety of programs and special offerings.
We are teachers, librarians, museum professionals, tour guides, and many more! We are a professional community united by a shared passion for the Civil War era. We take our name from the 151st Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, known as the "Schoolteachers Regiment" for the large number of educators in its ranks.
What we do
First and foremost, the Teachers Regiment is a place to share ideas, methods, and resources, electronically and in person, in order to raise the level of historical education nation-wide.
We are organized into regional "companies" under the Teachers Regiment banner. We also organize events, large and small, that are meant to spread knowledge of and appreciation for the twin missions of historical education and battlefield preservation.
How it works
The Teachers Regiment is free to join. You will be accepted into the ranks as a "private." As you participate in more Teachers Regiment activities — such as contributing to events, writing articles, and peer-reviewing new educational resources — you will continue to be promoted. Promotion comes with special perks, including priority registrations, special tours, sponsored field trips, and more.
The annual National Teacher Institute brings together educators from all over the world for a four-day event which includes breakout sessions, lectures, and tours from some of the leading experts in the history and education fields.
