He's been called "Unconditional Surrender," "The Butcher," and the Union's greatest commander. His humanity – gifts, flaws and contradictions – seems to have been his strength. Like all legendary figures, Ulysses Grant is not without controversy, but his lifetime of dedicated service to the United States more than merits his place in history. Here are just a few of the qualities that made this soldier, commander, husband, father, statesman and 18th President so exceptional.

Respect. While Grant's success at Ft. Donelson earned him the "Unconditional Surrender" moniker, in truth Grant accepted a long list of conditions during those negotiations, seemingly from a sense of compassion and respect for his enemies.

Determination. From Vicksburg to the Siege of Petersburg, many of Grant's most notable achievements demonstrated a dogged, unrelenting persistence.

Humility. From humble beginnings to humble memoirs, Grant demonstrated an unpretentious and self-effacing nature throughout his lifetime, even as accomplishments accrued and he became an international hero.

And his portrait has been on the American $50 note for more than 100 years.

And speaking of $50…

April is the last full month to receive an American Battlefield Trust Founding Member hat for membership contributions of $50 or more. It's also Grant's birth month and the month when Grant accepted Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House, effectively ending the Civil War.

In honor of the Union's storied commander, we'd like to ask you to give a Grant (i.e. $50) to the Trust and receive a Founding Member hat while you still can. Every membership comes with a subscription for four issues of our award-winning magazine, Hallowed Ground, plus a discount to our American Battlefield Trust online store.

Join us to save battlefields from the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812 and the American Civil War. Together, we can give future generations an invaluable gift: the hallowed lands where our nation's history was shaped by fascinating individuals.

And whether you're just joining today or have been a member for years, please share this offer with the fellow patriots and history lovers in your life. We can accomplish so much more if we work together!
